- City of London Ohio
Letter from Patrick J. Closser, Mayor
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and electing me Mayor of London. I am excited to serve the citizens of the Great City of London and would like to let you all know that I am ready to roll my sleeves up and get to work. People have a lot of faith in me and I am not going to let them down. I would also like to give you a little insight into who I am and my goals I have while in office.
Born and raised in London, I have enjoyed being a part of a thriving community of caring, down-to-earth people. I have been married to my smart and beautiful wife Melissa for over 7 years and we just had our first child, Maddoxx. My wife, son, family and friends are an important part of my life and very supportive of everything I do. I am also lifelong and active member of St. Patrick's Church and for the past 13 years I have been the owner / operator of Casey's Carry Out in Downtown London.
Wanting to see the City that I love continue to grow, I entered local politics and my experience now spans several years. In 2011, the Madison County Republican Central Committee appointed me London City Councilman for Ward 1. In 2012, I ran for the same seat and was elected for a two-year term. I just ended my service as London City Council President and I have five years of local government experience under my belt. I feel my history serving within the City of London's government gives me knowledge of the City's inner workings that only comes with experience. Through serving on many City committees and as the Finance Committee Chairman, I feel I have obtained the skills needed to be a great mayor.
Since 2008, I have served on multiple community service groups, in many different capacities.
I have been the chairman for the London Rib & JazzFest and the London Fourth of July Parade committees for the past five years. These committees have helped me polish my leadership skills while hosting great events that give our citizens something to participate in and be proud of. As a founding member of the London Community Organization and my involvement on the Madison County Chamber of Commerce Board, Community Improvement Corporation Board, Downtown London Association Board, and London Visual Arts Guild Board has made me aware of the community's needs and accessible for our citizens to voice their ideas on how to continue improving our growing City, while keeping the small town feel that make London so special. I did not join these groups for the sole purpose of padding my resume for my political aspirations; I joined these groups because I truly care about the City of London and I wanted to make a difference. I felt it was my civic duty to do what I could to enhance the lives of the citizens of London, Madison County, and the State of Ohio.
A few of the goals I have for my term to help make a stronger community and better London are:
I will build stronger relationships, be available and open up the lines of communication with County Officials, City Officials, Service Groups and especially the Citizens. If we all can work together, get involved and listen to each other we can reach goals that will improve the Great City of London.
I will strengthen our workforce by getting potential employees qualified and ready to take positions at existing businesses in London (Workforce Readiness Program). I will work with the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services, London High School, Madison County Future Incorporated (Community Improvement Corporation) and the local businesses to get these potential employees prepared to fill positions right out of high school.
Going hand in hand with strengthening the workforce I will pursue new businesses to locate in all areas of London. I will work closely with the Madison County Chamber of Commerce, Madison County Future Incorporated (Community Improvement Corporation), local service groups and the citizens of London to accomplish this goal. I will make sure that any business I pursue will be the right fit for the City of London. There is a lot of opportunity to fill empty store fronts, bring business office jobs and grow our industrial area. We have a lot of brilliant and skilled workers leaving our great city everyday to go to work in other towns or leaving London all together to pursue job opportunities. We need to keep these citizens in London and give them the job opportunities they are qualified for. With these extra jobs the City's revenue will increase without raising taxes and this money can be used to strengthen the departments, bring in more recreation for kids and work on the City's infrastructure (roads, sidewalks and bridges).
I will focus on the drug problem in London. The local authorities have done a great job on this issue but the problem seems to keep growing country wide including London. I will work with the London Police Department, Madison County Sheriffs and the Local Schools to curb this epidemic sweeping across the nation. I feel if we can get into the schools and set up programs early we can stop kids from using drugs before they even get started.
I will also bring on Joe Mosier as my Safety Service Director. Joe Mosier is a successful business man that has lived in London and has been an involved citizen for 50 years. He was an employee of the London City Auditors office which gives him great insight in the operations and finances of the city. I know we will make a great team that will improve and grow London.
I am excited to be a part of a strong team of employees and citizens that the City of London has. I can already see the excitement in London and that we are getting all the right pieces into place. London is ready to turn the corner and make it an even better place to live, work and play. I know that I will be able to lead the charge to turn that corner to grown and improve London while keeping that small town feel.
Please know that I am going to be a Mayor who is available and have an open door policy. It's time for a stronger community and a better London and I know with hard work and everyone working together the future for London is bright.
