Fire Department History

Belle Fire TruckThe London Fire Department has provided protection to its' citizens since 1866.

Does the the London Fire Department building look familiar? It has since been rehabbed to become the City Of London Administration Building! The Lady Bellle Fire Engine and the work horses resided in the area now serving as the London Chamber of Commerce Office.

The horses worked double duty in those days... collecting trash during off hours for the city. Old stories speak of the horses spilling trash all over the roads when they clearly heard the city bell "sound the alert" of a fire! This lead to a quick release button for the trash wagon.

Lady Belle started her career in 1871 and retired in 1929... The engine was restored to her glory in the 1960's after our proud citizens donated funds.   She is now housed at the Madison County Historical Society.

The City of London is a great town, with a rich history. The London Fire Department is proud to be a part of what makes London Ohio a great place to live.
